Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month continues with legal trailblazer, Hiram Fong! Fong was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1899 after his family immigrated from China to work on sugar plantations in Hawaii. He obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School and during World War II, served as a major judge in the U.S. Army Air Force. When Hawaii achieved statehood in 1959, Fong ran for office and became the first Asian American U.S. senator and the first Asian American to receive delegate votes for his party to be nominated for President of the United States. #asianamericanandpacificislanderheritagemonth #asianamericanheritagemonth #legalaccess #legalplan #voluntarybenefits #memberbenefits #makinghistory #trailblazer #legaltrailblazer

At long last! You’re out of an apartment and into a new house. The garden you’ve been dreaming of, bursting with fresh summer vegetables, is finally a possibility. Will you make salsa? Marinara? Perhaps ratatouille?! You can’t wait share to the love with family and friends, maybe even neighbors. Speaking of neighbors… When plotting your garden, it’s important to determine your property’s boundaries. This will help you avoid neighborly legal disputes. And give you plenty of time to enjoy your bounty! #legalplans #gardening #spring #summer #legalaccess #voluntarybenefits #employeebenefits #employeecare #employers

Employers are uniquely positioned to positively impact employees’ mental health. According to MetLife’s Annual U.S. Employee Benefit Trends Study, intersection of work and life is increasing workers’ stress. In fact, employees cited intersection of work and life as among the top drivers of poor mental health, alongside financial and economic factors. This suggests that employee expectations for care outside of work will only increase over time. Demonstrating employee care through better pay and better benefit doesn’t just benefit employees, it benefits employers too. #legalplan #legalaccess #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawarenessday #nationallawday #employeecare #employers #voluntarybenefits #memberbenefits

Have you heard of Dalip Singh Saund? He was born in Punjab, India in 1899 and immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island. Thanks to his efforts, Congress passed the Luce-Celler Act of 1946 which allowed Southeast Asians to become naturalized U.S. citizens. After he became a naturalized in 1949, he ran for election as local judgeship and won the post. Then in 1955, he ran for a seat in the House of Representatives and became the first Asian American, Indian American, and first Sikh American to be elected to Congress. #legaltrailblazer #asianamericanandpacificislanderheritagemonth #asianamericanheritagemonth #legalaccess #legalplan #voluntarybenefits #memberbenefits #makinghistory #trailblazer

Hong Yen Chang became the first Chinese American lawyer in the U.S. in 1888, but not without facing many obstacles. He was born in 1859 in Guangdong, China and was one of 120 students that were selected to study in the U.S. through the Chinese Educational Mission in 1872. He later graduated with honors from Columbia Law School. Although Chang was already naturalized in 1887, the New York Supreme Court deemed it invalid and wouldn't allow him to apply to the bar. Later, a law was passed that allowed him to apply to the bar — but when he moved to California, the state Supreme Court ruled the New York-issued naturalization certificate invalid, and he was rejected from the bar once again. Finally, in 2015, he was posthumously granted admission to the California State Bar. While he never saw his hard work come to fruition in his lifetime, Hong Yen Chang made a world of difference, paving the path for countless others. #asianamericanandpacificislanderheritagemonth #asianamericanheritagemonth #legalaccess #legalplan #voluntarybenefits #memberbenefits #makinghistory #trailblazer #legaltrailblazer
